Magic for kids and adults
There is a simple answer to this, and a more complicated answer to it. Let’s start with the simple answer. Children love magic more than adults because they don’t expect to understand complex happenings. What do I mean by that? Children don’t look deep into things that happen, whereas adults tend to look at all of the tiny details that they can spot, which can sometimes confuse them and distract them from what they should be looking at. However, let’s get deeper into this topic and find out the more complex answer.
Our Brains
As we grow older and our brains continue to develop, we think in different ways and see things differently. This applies to a lot of things like the way we see current events, the news, religion, different sides of arguments. We understand things a lot more because we look at them deeper than we did as a child, and that is something that magicians take advantage of when performing their acts so that we don’t catch the subtle things that they do.
Children on the other hand, they don’t look at things as in depth as adults do. They look at things from a simple perspective, which is something that can weaken a magician’s act.
A magician works on misdirection. They are incredibly enthusiastic about their acts, this way they are able to misdirect their audience a lot easier and perform their act successfully.
When children notice the small details that magicians hope nobody notices, they feel a lot more excited than they did before. They know or saw something that they weren’t supposed to, and that’s something that they’ll hold on to. This is one of the biggest reasons that children love magic more than adults do.
Magicians Attitude
A children’s magician is slightly different from a regular magician. A children’s magician will do similar tricks, however they’ll do so on a smaller scale for their children audience to better understand. To accompany their act, most magicians who are performing for children act a bit “sillier” than they would otherwise, this allows for the children to enjoy the show a lot more than they would if the magician wasn’t. In general, children feel more comfortable around someone who’s laid back, rather than someone who has a serious attitude, and this allows for them to really enjoy the magicians show.
Movies
Something that a lot of children obsess about at a young age is the idea of things that don’t make a lot of sense. That may not make a lot of sense, but let me explain.
In a lot of television shows and movies, one of the most modern being Dr. Who, there are an endless number of things that simply don’t make sense in this current day and age. Whether it be monsters trolling the streets of London, or if Harry Potter is flying through the skies on a broom. Children love things that don’t make a lot of sense, and if they haven’t caught on to the little tricks that the magician has been doing, they’ll love the act a lot more simply due to the fact that they are thinking to themselves, “How did they do that?! That doesn’t make sense!”.
As you can see, there are a few different angles that can be taken on this, but it all grinds down to how adults look for and focus in on the tiny details that magicians hope for them to focus on while they misdirect them, and children not being deluded by these small details and instead focussing on the act as a whole and ignoring the misdirection.
